More specifically, the neuroscience of vision compares it with painting. From the point of view of our visual sense, what defines our brain function is the visual mechanism. This thesis tries to approach such a mechanism, from the functioning of the artwork. Such a functioning, beholds the artist as object of perceptual transformation. Accordingly, the primary defining feature of the methodology of this thesis, is to limit our research into our brain function, to the representations produced by visual artists. Our aim is to draw a distinction between our area of knowledge and the sciences of vision and brain. This involves the intention of adding something to this sciences point of view. If we ask what contributes the visual art research to the science of vision, we would answer it locates the place of knowledge in human life. Namely, it captures the mechanism of our vision as a temporal phenomenon. As happens in the rest of visual studies, is a process that we analize, which relates to the visual function. But while the science of vision is limited to an spacial analysis of this process, visual art, due to the nature of its representations, is constrained to a temporal analysis of it. The framework derived from this analysis, is a theory of human visual function which does not assert the way our brain functions, but an indicative proposal based on the reality of our experience. This means the analytical center of this thesis, will be accompained by actual data, knowledge itself. It is this knowledge from science in general which can be called “constraint”: the constraint to our brain function is what allows the manifestation of time in our World experience. As our theory of the visual function is the manner we approach this unitary phenomenon, we must talk about the several constraints that define it. The overall framework of our research will emerge from the adoption of two complementary perspectives to the theoretical. This perspectives from which to consider the constraints, as the object of our study are the historical and the experimental one. Hence, some issues recur two or even three times in the index. The arrangement is as follows: the first part is the historic one, and a knowledge of the constraints is generated from the sensory experience; the second part is the theoretical one, and the constraints are analized using the representations of visual art as the empirical basis, the third part is the experimental one, and a knowledge of the constraints is generated from the making of an image. In a fourth part dedicated to the conclusions, the experimental part foreshadows our way to accomplish the mechanics of the human visual process. As our area of expertise is painting, this means that painting is the place from which to hold our theoretical construction.[Es] Junto con el desarrollo de las neurociencias durante el siglo pasado y en éste, ha surgido la comparación del funcionamiento de nuestro cerebro con el de la obra de arte. Más en concreto, la neurociencia de la visión lo compara con la pintura. Desde el punto de vista de nuestro sentido visual, lo que define nuestra función cerebral es el mecanismo de ver. Esta tesis intenta aproximarse a dicho mecanismo desde el funcionamiento de la obra de arte visual. Dicho funcionamiento tiene al artista como objeto de transformación perceptiva. En consecuencia, el rasgo básico que define la metodología de esta tesis, es el de limitar nuestra búsqueda acerca de nuestra función cerebral, a las representaciones que producimos los artistas visuales. Nuestra aspiración es trazar una distinción entre nuestra área de conocimiento con respecto a las ciencias de la visión y del cerebro. Esto implica la intención de añadir algo al punto de vista de estas ciencias. A la pregunta de qué aporta la investigación en artes visuales a la ciencia de la visión, responderíamos que sitúa el lugar del conocimiento en la vida humana. Es decir, capta el mecanismo de nuestra visión como fenómeno temporal: como sucede en el resto de los estudios visuales, es un proceso lo que analizamos, lo que atañe a la función cerebral. Pero mientras las ciencias de la visión deben limitarse a un análisis espacial de este proceso, el arte visual, debido a la naturaleza de sus representaciones, se ve constreñido a un análisis temporal del mismo. La estructura que se deriva de este análisis es una teoría acerca de la función visual humana que no afirma el modo de funcionamiento de nuestro cerebro, sino que es una propuesta orientativa basada en la realidad de nuestra experiencia. Esto significa que a la parte central analítica de esta tesis, le van a acompañar los datos efectivos, el conocimiento propiamente dicho. Es a este conocimiento a lo que en general se le puede llamar “constricción” desde la ciencia: la constricción a nuestra función cerebral es lo que permite que el tiempo se manifieste en nuestra experiencia del mundo. Como nuestra teoría acerca de la función visual es la manera que tenemos de aproximarnos a este fenómeno unitario, tendremos que hablar de que son varias las constricciones que la definen. La estructura total de nuestra investigación va a emerger de la adopción de dos puntos de vista complementarios al teórico desde los que considerar las constricciones como la materia objeto de nuestro estudio: histórico y experimental. De ahí que ciertas cuestiones se repitan dos o incluso tres veces en el índice. La ordenación es la siguiente: la primera parte es la histórica, y generamos un conocimiento en torno a las constricciones, desde la experiencia sensorial; la segunda parte es la teórica, y analizamos las constricciones utilizando como base empírica las representaciones del arte visual; la tercera parte es la experimental, y generamos un conocimiento en torno a las constricciones desde la fabricación de una imagen. En una cuarta parte dedicada a las conclusiones, la parte experimental se prefigura como nuestra forma de llegar a la mecánica del proceso visual humano.
