Brčko Distrikt- from conflict to integration

When the Dayton Peace Agreement were signed in 1995, Brcko was one of the most war-torn areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Carl Blidt, former High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, described Brčko as the place where the world has come to an end. In 2009, the scars of war in Brcko, are not visible at first sight. Damaged and destroyed buildings were largely repaired or rebuilt, the city has a relaxed atmosphere and there are visible signs of economic development. In its ten years of existence, despite all the political and economic difficulties, this political model has proved to be successful as an oasis of liberal democracy in the country which still faces conflicts between various ethnic groups.
