The Human Rights debate in the Asia-Pacific region: the dangers of failing to maintain a constructive dialogue

El autor analiza las consecuencias políticas, económicas y sociales que han tenido las manifestaciones y críticas vertidas por algunos gobiernos de la región del Asia-Pacífico en relación a la situación de los derechos humanos en países vecinos. Sugiere los modos de arribar-a nivel bilateral, subregional y regional-las delicadas cuestiones de derechos humanos, haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de reemplazar las relaciones basadas en la confrontación y la crítica por aquellas sustentadas en el diálogo y la cooperación, dirigidas a garantizar las libertades de los ciudadanos y a mejorar el standard general de vida de los pueblos del Asia-Pacífico.The author analyses the political, economic and social consequences of the statements and criticism made by some governments of the Asia- Pacific region, as regards the situation of human rights in neighbouring countries. He also suggests ways of approaching-in the bilateral, subregional and regional levels- the delicate human rights matters, emphasising the importance of replacing relationships based on criticism and confrontation with those based on dialogue and co-operation, aimed at guaranteeing citizens? liberties and improving the standard of living of the Asian-Pacific peoples.Dossier: Derechos HumanosInstituto de Relaciones Internacionale
