El estudio de como el crimen afecta a diversos grupos de ingresos presenta varias dificultades. La primera es que las actividades para evitar crímenes varían entre estos grupos. Por lo tanto, una menor tasa de victimización en un grupo podría no reflejar menor crimen, sino mayor inversión en evitarlo. Una segunda dificultad es que solamente una pequeña fracción de la población es victimizada, lo cual causa que los tests estadísticos tengan menor potencia para detectar diferencias grupales.
