The author sets out to explore the place of empathy within the history curriculum. He focuses particularly on the challenges to empathy, and ways that might overcome these problems. He goes on to suggest principles that might underpin the teaching of empathy which would avoid the disputes and difficulties experienced in the 1980s and 1990
