In some languages, morphologically complex word forms may involve vowel alternations between front and back phonemes, as illustrated in the German noun Stock (Stocknot, vert, similarStöcke sticknot, vert, similarsticks ) versus the non-alternating Stoff (Stoffnot, vert, similarStoffe clothnot, vert, similarcloths ).
