In the human information processing system, identification of stimuli and particularly response selection constitute processes with restricted capacity. Therefore, these processes can run simultaneously for several stimuli, respectively, tasks only in a limited way. However, by a strategic variation of visuo-spatial attention, two tasks can be processed either in a (more) serial or in a (more) parallel mode. Serial processing, where the processes with limited capacity are accessed only by one task at a time, is believed to be an optimal strategy to minimize the interference between the tasks and thus to improve performance (Logan & Gordon, 2001; Meyer & Kieras, 1997b).
