The object of this paper is exploration of application of optical fibers as intensity-based sensors in real-time damage detection in laminate composite materials, and discussion of loading transfer mechanisms through thermoplastic composites. For experimental purposes, thermoplastic laminate composite materials aramid fiber/poly (vinyl butyral) with embedded optical fibers were made. Initiation of damage and fracture during testing was detected by observation of the intensity drop of the light signal transmitted through optical fiber.
