India and China have experienced almost similar kind of political history till the middle of the last Century, although experienced very different developmental path thereafter. In this paper an attempt has been made to investigate the reason for this with respect to the competitive position of both the countries in the World. The sources of the competitive edge for both the countries have been identified. The estimations have been made at disaggregated commodity level where commodity groups have been made with respect to specific sectors as well as the developmental characteristics of the commodity bundle.
