Current Research of Daoist Ritual Music in China

Ritual traditions are important identity markers of the Chinese culture. As a major indigenous religio-philosophical tradition of China, Daoism has played an important role in the life of people of China for well over 1,800 years. In this paper, I shall first outline development of religious Daoism in the history of China, followed by a review of current research of Daoist ritual music. From the Zhou dynasty (1066-256 B.C.) to the end of second century, numerous accounts were made in historical writings, describing ritual activities of wushi (shaman and spirit-medium) and fangshi (man of magical techniques) in the courts and among the common people. They performed rituals in honor of ancestors and in pursuit of immortality. These are enerally viewed as predecessors of religious Daoism. The magical techniques used by the wushi and fangshi were amalgamated into the cosmology of yinyang wuxing by Zou Yan (circa 350-270 B.C.). 의식 전통은 중국 문화의 정체성의 중요한 지표이다. 도가는 중국 고유의 종교·철학적 전통의 큰 흐름의 하나로서 1,800년 이상에 걸쳐 중국인의 삶에서 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 이 글에서 필자는 먼저 종교 도교의 일반 배경으로서 그 역사적 발전과 의식 내용을 개관하고 나서, 도교 의식음악에 관한 최근의 연구현황을 살펴보려 한다. 주(周, 1066-256 BC) 이후 2세기 말까지 궁중과 민간의 무사(뽀師: 무당, 영매)와 방사(方士: 술사)의 의식활동에 관한 언급이 사료에 수없이 기록되어 있다. 무사·방사는 조상을 섬기고 불로장생을 불러오는 의식을 수행했다. 일반으로 이것을 종교 도교의 전신으로 본다. 무사와 방사의 술수는 추연(都術, 350-2701 BC)의 음양오행(陰陽五行)의 우주론에 통합되었다
