Ritual traditions are important identity markers of the Chinese culture. As a major indigenous religio-philosophical tradition of China, Daoism has played an important role in the life of people of China for well over 1,800 years. In this paper, I shall first outline development of religious Daoism in the history of China, followed by a review of current research of Daoist ritual music. From the Zhou dynasty (1066-256 B.C.) to the end of second century, numerous accounts were made in historical writings, describing ritual activities of wushi (shaman and spirit-medium) and fangshi (man of magical techniques) in the courts and among the common people.
