While more and more people worldwide are using Chinese Herbal Medicine, the issue of their safety and efficacy has raised international concern. Yet, one of the major problems which limits the use and the development of these herbal medicines is the occasional poor quality. Therefore authentication, identification and standardization of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) and related products is an absolute necessity to prove their bioequivalence/phytoequivalence and thus their safety and efficacy. However TCM remedies are often multicomponent mixtures and assuring the quality of such preparations is a challenging task. Fingerprinting techniques like TLC, GC or HPLC seem to be the common way to answer this task.
