Fiber optic sensors based on photogenerated Bragg gratings are finding increased applications in "smart structures" for civil, industrial and military use. Lightweight, high corrosion resistance and high electromagnetic immunity are some of the properties of optical fiber sensors that make them advantageous over conventional electric sensors.
