This research thesis details the design and implementation of an automode modem using digital signal processing techniques. The reason for choosing digital signal processing techniques is that they permit robust, reliable and economical solutions in the modem design field. This automode modem incorporates multiple modulation techniques and signalling rates for data transmission. It has the capability of detecting the characteristics of the modem which it is connected to and switching to the appropriate combination to allow interworking at the highest possible signalling rate.
