A study on Singapore's premium bus service

Premium Bus Service (PBS) in Singapore is a type of bus service that provides a higher level of service than basic bus with higher fares. The PBS services are primarily operated during the morning peak-hour to transport commuters to work. The key feature of PBS is to provide guaranteed seat for its passengers. By regulation, PBS fare must be at least 1.5 times higher than the equivalent basic bus/MRT services; they have to be fully air-conditioned with no standees allowed on board. By design, PBS is expected to offer commuters the choice of a faster and more direct journey, and a more comfortable ride and considerable time savings at a differentiated fare. This study examined the effectiveness of PBS to achieve this purpose, reviewed its achievement from 2007 through 2010, and suggested factors to consider for running PBS service as well as PBS scheme.
