A novel method for adaptive mesh refinement and simplification for cloth animation is presented in this thesis. Adaptive refinement is a well-known topic in many areas including computer graphics, computational physics and finite element modelling. It aims to improve the performance by the redistribution of computational efforts over the spatial domain. More detailed regions are simulated with finer resolutions while the less detailed regions are simulated with more coarse ones. The novelty of the proposed method is its application to the arbitrary triangu-lar meshes and the introduction of the simplification operation.
