Dear fashion,

The fast fashion industry is expanding rapidly where goods are produced at lower prices with lower quality. Over the last 15 years, clothing production has doubled, and as a society we are purchasing 400% more clothing today than we did just 20 years ago. This excess of clothing has detrimental effects to the environment when they are easily disposed. Research has shown that consumers are more likely to dispose of cheaper, mass-produced fashion garments than pricier ones. Hence, fast fashion is contributing to this excessive fashion consumption and disposal. More styles, cheaper prices, more waste created. In an attempt to address and create awareness around this issue, DEAR FASHION aims to study the consumption habits of the average young adult in relation to fast fashion. Through a series of mediation exercise with consumers, this project hopes to study the impact that fast fashion has on society and confront the seismic problem by revisiting relationships with our clothes. An elaborate photo-documentation of 1126 articles of clothings from 7 individuals takes the form of Fashion Obituaries accompanied by a Registrar - which catalogues their aesthetics to frequency worn. With a message tagged to each clothing, it serves as a reminder on how we are falling victim to fashion consumerism today.Bachelor of Fine Art
