Over the past years, China has become increasingly competitive and is rapidly emerging as a global economic power. Extensive research has been conducted by publications such as the World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) to measure the competitiveness of countries such as China. However, there is a lack of research that analyses the competitiveness of countries at a city-level or provincial level. Given the vast geographical size of China, levels of competitiveness may vary greatly across provinces. This study aims to fill this gap by comparing competitiveness levels at a disaggregated level, so as to better inform policy makers to implement strategies that target specific provinces
