248 p.The thesis discusses two cultural phenomena in China from 1980 to 1990s caused by two women writers, San Mao and You Jin—one from Taiwan while the other from Singapore. Both make notable impacts on Chinese readers of the time creating heated effect of popular culture by their travel essays on the exotic desert scenery based on their experience of residence there. This thesis ana lyzes such significant cultural phenomena from two dimensions : one is from sociological viewpoint to examine the external relationship between the cultural phenomena and the background of the era (including the change of literary development and the emergency of readers' groups); the other is from feminist perspective to interpret the three internal aspects of these cultural phenomena, namely, the women writes themselves, their readers and their works.Master of Art
