135 p.IEEE 802.11 is the WLAN standard for providing short range data communication at a moderate to high speed generally within a building. IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) is the standard for broadband WMANs which provide Internet access over long ranges in outdoor environments. Inside the building, however, it is susceptible to fading. By integrating WLAN and WiMAX, we would be able to acquire the best of both these technologies. Ultimately, WiMAX based wireless networks would bestow backhaul support for WLAN mobile hotspots. Therefore, the service availability for mobile Internet users will expand through the extended coverage range of WLAN.
