One emerging technology in the field of water treatment is the use of photocatalysts as an advanced oxidation treatment process. Unlike conventional water treatment and membrane processes, photocatalysts have the ability to completely oxidise and mineralise organic pollutants and convert them into simple, harmless molecules of carbon dioxide and water. However, there are many technical barriers that impede the commercialisation of existing photocatalysts such as Titanium Dioxide (TiO2). The first is the need for UV light activation, which makes photocatalysis energy intensive.
