A needs assessment for equal benefits for unwed single mothers in Singapore

Unwed single mothers have faced countless of discrimination and deprivation in Singapore, and is because of the Government’s model of a nuclear family. However, by not having a father, does it really make the mother a ‘lesser’ mother? Is it not the role of the Government to help those that are in need? Through semi-structured interviews, a needs assessment is investigated, whether the Government should provide a less discriminated set of policies. By adopting the discourse of Asian values, this paper considers the complicated situation the Government is in. While such discourse provides an explanation to the ideal family model, it has failed to explain the choice of single mothers. The concept of individualization is explored, and applied to them. Findings have shown that the need of a basic shelter is essential, but single mothers believe that without the help of the Government, they are still capable of survival.Bachelor of Art
