You Are What You Eat: Vegetarianism and Self-Identity in Singapore

This paper seeks to explore the vegetarianism influences the self-identity for convert ethical vegetarians, as well as how vegetarianism might impact their social relationships and presentation of self especially since vegetarianism may be viewed as a consumption practice that directly confronts the norms of society. As ethical vegetarians often have strong beliefs about animal rights and considering the role of society in the construction of the self, this paper seeks to examine the impact of vegetarianism on their self-identity and construction process of the self-identity. The ways in which convert ethical vegetarians endeavour to construct their vegetarian identity and how they negotiate their vegetarian identity in relation to their other identities will also be explored.Bachelor of Art
