Because almost all peptides and proteins have only one N- and one C-terminus, modification targeting terminal residues is obviously an attractive way to introduce a functional group into a peptide or a protein at a single site as compared to the reactions on the amino acid side chains. This forms the rationale of our study. First, I aim to provide reliable information about the transamination reaction to make future use of this NT-specific protein modification reaction in a much more predictable way.
