The study on the use of contract workers was conducted to understand the operation of the contract work system in Singapore. It analyzes the impact of the use of contract workers on human resource management (HRM) practices and also looks into the feasibility of using contract workers as a long-term solution to the tight labour market. Interviews were conducted with three organisations in the· manufacturing sector to gather the necessary information. Contract workers are used by organisations as an alternative form of employment. They provide flexibility which is needed to meet their fluctuating production demands. In the process, however, they also bring about problems such as high turnover rates.
