Passively mode-locked fiber lasers are among the best optical pulsed sources available today due to their simplicity and their ability to generate transform-limited optical pulses in the picosecond and subpicosecond regimes. A key device in a passively mode-locked fiber laser is a nonlinear element, which has an intensity-dependent response to favour optical pulse formation over continuous-wave lasing. This can usually be a saturable absorber, such as a semiconductor saturable absorber, or an effective absorber such as a nonlinear polarization switch, a nonlinear optical loop mirror and its variants.
