The rock failure mechanism is comprised of crack initiation, crack propagation, crack coalescence and the ultimate failure stage. The objective of this report is to evaluate the role of some critical properties that would play in the failure process. A software developed on the basis of the discontinuous deformation analysis is utilized in this report to simulate the biaxial compression test. The inherent properties of rock and loading configuration are taken into consideration in this simulation.Some investigations have been conducted by previous students under uniaxial compression where the failure is dominated by wing cracks and resulting in the axial splitting.
