Trophic relations and use of area of the franciscana dolphin, Pontoporia blainvillei (Gervais and d\'Orbigny, 1844) and the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis (Van Bénéden, 1864) from the southeastern coast of Brazil determined by the carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes composition

Os cetáceos desempenham diversos papéis ecológicos de suma importância em ecossistemas aquáticos. Compreender como interagem com o meio biótico e abiótico à sua volta irá refinar o conhecimento sobre estes papéis ecológicos desempenhados. Uma das formas para atingir esta meta reside em estudar seus nichos ecológicos, através da investigação do uso de área e das relações tróficas. Este estudo visou descrever as características de uso de área e da ecologia trófica de toninhas (Pontoporia blainvillei) e botos-cinza (Sotalia guianensis) capturados acidentalmente no litoral sul do Estado de São Paulo e de botos-cinza biopsiados dentro do estuário de Cananéia entre 2002 e 2018, a partir da análise de isótopos estáveis de carbono (δ 13C) e nitrogênio (δ15N). Avaliou-se também a relação isotópica entre as duas espécies-alvo e suas principais presas, bem como as assinaturas isotópicas das classes sexuais. As razões isotópicas foram estimadas a partir de amostras de pele. As análises químicas foram realizadas por um analisador elementar interligado a um espectrômetro de massa. O tamanho e a sobreposição do nicho isotópico foram calculados utilizando o pacote SIBER e a contribuição de cada presa na dieta foi calculada utilizando o pacote simmr, ambos do software estatístico R. Os resultados do presente estudo mostraram que existe uma segregação espacial e não trófica entre botos-cinza e toninhas da região. Já os botos-cinza amostrados dentro e fora do estuário demonstram uma segregação trófica. A ictiofauna demonstrou uma maior importância nos hábitos alimentares dos botos-cinza e os cefalópodes nos hábitos alimentares da toninha. Não houve segregação espacial ou trófica entre classes sexuais de toninhas e de botos-cinza. O presente estudo trouxe novas informações sobre o uso de área e a ecologia trófica de botos-cinza e de toninhas no litoral sul do Estado de São Paulo. Mostrou também a diferença entre o comportamento de forrageamento das espécies, evidenciou diferenças regionais ao se comparar os resultados obtidos com distintas populações das duas espécies, e indicou novos caminhos a serem investigados.Cetaceans play important ecological roles in aquatic ecosystems. Understanding how they interact with the biotic and abiotic environment will enhance knowledge on these ecological roles. One of the tools to achieve this goal lies on the study of their ecological niches through the investigation of the use of area and trophic relationships. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of the use of area and the trophic ecology of franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei) and Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) accidentally caught off the south coast of São Paulo State, and Guiana dolphins biopsied in the Cananéia estuary between 2002 and 2018, based on the carbon (δ13C) and thee nitrogen (δ 15N) stable isotopes analysis. The isotopic relationship among the two target species and their main preys was also evaluated, as well as the comparison of the isotopic signatures between sexual classes. Isotopic ratios were estimated from skin samples. The chemical analyzes were performed by the use of an elemental analyzer interconnected to a mass spectrometer. The isotopic niche size and overlap were calculated using the SIBER package and the contribution of each prey in the diet was calculated using the simmr package, both of the statistical software R. The present study results showed a spatial and non-trophic segregation between Guiana dolphins and franciscanas. The Guiana dolphins sampled in and out of the estuary showed trophic segregation. The ichthyofauna showed a greater importance to the Guiana dolphins and the cephalopods to the franciscanas feeding habits. There was no spatial or trophic segregation between sex classes of franciscana and Guiana dolphins. The present study brought up new contributions about the use of area and the trophic ecology of Guiana and franciscana dolphins in the southern coast of São Paulo State. It also showed the difference between the species\' foraging behavior, highlighted regional differences when comparing the results of different populations of both species, and indicated new avenues to be investigated
