With increasing temperature, metallic glasses (MGs) undergo first glass transition without pronounced structural change and then crystallization with distinct variation in structure and properties. The present study shows a structural change of short-range order induced by an electron-delocalization transition, along with an unusual large-volume shrinkage in Ce-based MGs. An f-electron localization-delocalization transition with thermal hysteresis is observed from the temperature dependence of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra, indicating an inheritance of the 4f configuration of pure Ce.
