The high brightness of undulators opens up the possibility of performing exciting new experiments in the soft X-ray spectral range. Considerable effort has been devoted by several groups to the design of high resolution and high throughput beamlines which will allow these experiments to be performed. A serious consideration in the beamline design is the high radiative power emitted by the insertion device; part of this power will be absorbed by the optical elements and can degrade the resolution and throughput of the beamline. The performance of operating and planned grating monochromators at undulator beamlines and the solutions adopted for dealing with the heat load problem are discussed.
