The kinetics of the α-quartz-coesite phase transition have been studied in the pressure range 3.2 – 5.2 GPa and in the temperature range 950 K – 1170 K by insitu X-ray diffraction using a MAX80 cubic anvil high-pressure apparatus. From the measured transition rates the thermodynamic properties were calculated, with heat of transition = 8.2 KJ/mol and the activation energy = 172.2 KJ/mol. The quenched reaction products were investigated using TEM to analyse the nucleation and growth mechanism. One specific feature of the synthesised coesite crystals was a concentrated microtwinning. Its influence on the thermodynamics of the α-quartz-coesite phase transition is discussed
