A description of the magnetic dichroism in X-ray absorption (MXD) based on the spin polarized relativistic linear-muffin-tin-orbital (SPRLMTO) method of band structure calculation is proposed. The high efficiency of the SPRLMTO-method allows its straightforward application to magnetic multilayer systems. This is demonstrated by calculations for the L2,3-edges of Co and Cu in Co5/Cu4, which are found to be in very satisfying agreement with the experiment
