The linearly polarized Cu K and Fe K pre-edge absorption spectra of single-crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and FeCO3 are investigated in the transmission geometry. Using the orientation-dependent selection rules for 1s → 3d quadrupole transitions, the angular dependence of the spectra are analyzed and unoccupied m-resolved densities of 3d-like states are determined
