Universities and Google News: international impact through online communication media

La difusión de la actividad científica y la mediatización de la ciencia en la actualidad convergen en Internet. Ambos procesos contribuyen a la creación de la reputación online de las instituciones académicas. Este estudio discute si la capacidad investigadora de una universidad repercute en su presencia en los medios digitales. Para responder a esta cuestión se mide y compara la producción científica y las noticias recuperadas por Google News de nueve universidades. Los resultados muestran que las instituciones académicas con mayor capacidad científica tienen a su vez más visibilidad mediática y, por tanto, más impacto y prestigio.The dissemination of scientific information and its presence in the main media converge on the Internet. Both processes contribute to create the online reputation of an academic institution. This study discusses whether the research competence of a university has an impact on its digital media presence. To answer this question, we measured and compared the research output from nine universities together with news about them retrieved from Google News. The results show that the greater the scientific capacity, the greater the media visibility, therefore resulting in greater impact and standing
