The decorative covers of the dated Arabic bookbindings of the School of Arabic Studies-CSIC (Granada): Study and cataloguing of the decorative motifs

Las decoraciones inscritas sobre la piel que reviste la tapa del libro han sido objeto de observación y análisis específico dentro de los estudios integrales relativos al conocimiento de la manufactura libraría. El registro sistemático de los motivos decorativos, en asociación con otros parámetros intrínsecos de la encuadernación, supone una base complementaria para refutar o validar los resultados de los estudios codicológicos que se realizan sobre el ejemplar. Unos resultados, por otro lado, que devienen fundamentales para establecer las bases de los más adecuados protocolos para su conservación-restauración. Este artículo describe los resultados de la investigación llevada a cabo sobre 14 encuadernaciones datadas (siglos XIV-XIX) de la Colección de manuscritos árabes de la Escuela de Estudios Árabes-CSIC en Granada[1]. Aplicando diferentes técnicas de registro y documentación, las decoraciones de las diferentes cubiertas fueron reproducidas extrayendo de ellas los motivos decorativos, generando un catálogo de elementos que pretende complementar los ya existentes y servir como referente de comparación para futuros estudios codicológicos.The decorations inscribed on the leather of the bookcovers have been subject to observation and specific analysis within the comprehensive studies on the knowledge of book manufacturing. Registering the decorative motifs, as well as other intrinsic parameters of the binding, is a critical element in codicological studies which, being carried out on a one-to-one basis, are completely necessary in order to know the execution technique. Consequently, they become essential to establish the basis of the most suitable protocols for their conservation-restoration. This paper describes the results of the research carried out on 14 dated bindings (14th to 19th centuries) from the Collection of Arabic manuscripts of the School of Arabic Studies-CSIC in Granada. By using different registering and documentation techniques, the decorations of the different covers were replicated extracting the decorative motifs and generating a catalogue of elements that aims at complementing the existing ones and serving as reference for comparisons in future codicological studies
