In this talk, I will discuss how QCD event generators can be used to combine fixed-order multi-jet matrix elements. A successful combination allows to construct inclusive samples of scattering events, which describe states with multiple well-separated jets simultaneously with improved accuracy, while retaining the low-energy and non-perturbative features of the event generator. I will mainly focus on the recent 'unitarised merging' and 'NLO merging' methods, and on developments in the Pythia8 program
