In this paper mushrooms as an important food component were described. Their chemical composition: nitrogen compounds, carbohydrates, mineral and organic acids, as well as vitamins, enzymes and aromatic and extractable substances were discussed. Chemical composition of mushrooms was compared with the other foods - some kinds of meat. Also, micro and macroelements contents was presented.
