Teaching foreign languages with the theory of predicative and enunciative operations: a study of english phrasal verbs

This work’s aim is to analyze the intra and interlinguistic translation processes in teaching and learning English as a foreign language (LE) and Portuguese as mother tongue (LM). Using Antoine Culioli’s Theory of Predictive and Enunciative Operations (TPEO) as theoretical foundation, we start from the premise that language is by nature a dialogic activity that is constituted by a continuous process of translation. This study proposal confronts two teaching methodologies, an instrumental one, the most common in language teaching which, basically, takes native languages as objects of observation, disarticulating them from language, a fact that implies a notion of translation based on the linguistic system. The other methodology, supported by the author, is interactional / dialogical. Using TPEO’s principles, it demonstrates how this approach can be applied to foreign language teaching. To do so, we focus English phrasal verbs – a very troublesome issue for nonnative students because of their traits that are specifically typical of the English language. Based on an enunciative perspective, we will discuss the functioning of these structures as well as the approaches to teaching them. To support that discussion, we use a corpus made of twenty sentences from various sources such as films, songs, international newspapers, dictionaries and textbooks.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Este trabalho visa a analisar os processos de tradução intra e interlinguísticos observados no exercício de ensino–aprendizagem de língua, mais especificamente na relação entre o inglês como língua estrangeira (LE) e o português como língua materna (LM). Tendo como referencial teórico a Teoria das Operações Predicativas e Enunciativas (TOPE), de autoria de Antoine Culioli, partimos da premissa de que a linguagem é por natureza uma atividade dialógica que se constitui por um processo contínuo de tradução. Este estudo confronta duas metodologias de ensino, uma instrumental, reconhecidamente presente no ensino de línguas que, grosso modo, toma a língua como objeto de observação, desarticulando–a da linguagem, fato que implica uma noção de tradução pautada no sistema linguístico; e outra, interacional/dialógica, proposta defendida aqui como um caminho a ser aplicado ao ensino por meio dos pressupostos da TOPE. Para tanto, enfocam–se os verbos frasais da língua inglesa, que constituem uma questão problemática por serem estruturas típicas deste idioma, dotadas de características estranhas a falantes não nativos, o que dificulta consideravelmente seu processo de tradução. Discutiremos, então, sob a ótica enunciativa, o funcionamento destas marcas e como abordá-las em sala de aula. Para embasar esta discussão, usamos um corpus composto de vinte sentenças, extraídas de fontes como filmes, canções, jornais internacionais, dicionários e livros didáticos.CAPES: 88881.188035/2018-0
