Entre macacos velhos e queerpiras: uma etnografia por entre as interfaces dos serviços comerciais de busca por parceiros online no interior paulista

This thesis is an ethnography of the social uses of applications for partner’s search in the countryside of Sao Paulo state, and argues that the social uses of digital media constitute themselves as mediatization devices of subjects. The research field is built from the network of connections that I establish with my interlocutors: men born between the decades of 1975 and 2000, of the popular classes, who live in the countryside of Sao Paulo and who use commercial services for partner’s search for gay men. From the connections between my interlocutors and the interfaces, I propose an ethnographic approach to the social uses of apps. The ethnography presents and analyzes the ways in which these technologies are shaped by the contexts in which they are used. Technology generates opportunities, but also consequences that the subjects are forced to deal with. The “digital” generates new questions, approaches, conditions and also contingencies for the field research. The thesis mobilizes a diverse set of perspectives on ethnography alongside and inside digital media and proposes an understanding of the field as a network and, far from seeking a complete answer, intends to break apart an emerging theoretical-methodological framework to deal with fields wholly or partially constructed by technology. The work seeks to investigate the underlying rationale behind the platforms. Drawing on cultural, historical and sociological sources, I present a history of commercial services for partner search that connects preexisting forms with those in digital media. The uses placed in empirical contexts show how the subjects mobilize the technology also to respond to the contingencies that surround them. The ethnography shows how for men, especially those who live their sexual experiences with other men in secret, the digital interfaces can be read as a private and safe environment, but which requires the subject to take an active control position on the social situation. The explored hypothesis is that the applications generate a procedure for social interactions and, in doing so, legitimize the practices that engender. Furthermore, as occurs with the interfaces, the subjectivities and procedures adopted for intersubjective interactions are also socially modeled and displaced by its uses, as far as the forms of interaction undertaken here are instrumentalized for partner’s search within a set of previously established and enforced standards. Since it is from the materiality of the interfaces that subjects recognize themselves, by generating a procedure for intersubjective relations, applications are also constituted as materialized fragments of subjectivity.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Esta tese é uma etnografia dos usos sociais dos aplicativos de busca por parceiros no interior paulista e argumenta que os usos sociais das mídias digitais se constituem como dispositivos de midiatização dos sujeitos. O campo de pesquisa é construído a partir da rede de conexões que estabeleço com meus interlocutores: homens nascidos entre as décadas de 1975 e 2000, de classes populares, que vivem no interior paulista e que fazem uso de serviços comerciais de busca por parceiros para homens gays. A partir das conexões entre meus interlocutores e as interfaces, proponho uma abordagem etnográfica dos usos sociais dos Apps. A etnografia apresenta e analisa as maneiras como essas tecnologias são modeladas pelos contextos nos quais são usadas. A tecnologia gera oportunidades, mas também consequências com as quais os sujeitos são forçados a lidar. O digital gera novas questões, abordagens, condições e também contingências para a pesquisa de campo. A tese mobiliza um conjunto diverso de perspectivas sobre a etnografia com e nas mídias digitais e propõe uma compreensão do campo como rede e, longe de buscar respostas cabais, pretende esmiuçar um quadro teórico-metodológico emergente para tratar de campos inteira ou parcialmente construídos pela tecnologia. O trabalho busca esmiuçar as lógicas subjacentes às plataformas. Recorrendo a fontes culturais, históricas e sociológicas, apresento uma história dos serviços comerciais de busca por parceiros que conecta formas preexistentes com as que se desempenham nas mídias digitais. Os usos situados em contextos empíricos mostram como os sujeitos mobilizam a tecnologia também para responder às contingências que os cercam. A etnografia mostra como, sobretudo para os homens que vivem suas experiências sexuais com outros homens em segredo, as interfaces digitais podem ser lidas como um ambiente privado e seguro, mas que exige do sujeito uma postura de controle ativo sobre a situação social. A hipótese explorada é que os aplicativos geram um procedimento para as interações sociais e, ao fazê-lo legitimam as práticas que engendram. Além disso, assim como ocorre com as interfaces, as subjetividades e os procedimentos adotados para as interações intersubjetivas são também socialmente modelados e deslocadas pelos usos, na medida em que as formas de interação aqui empreendidas são instrumentalizadas para a busca por parceiros dentro de um conjunto de normas previamente estabelecidas e reforçadas. Uma vez que é a partir da materialidade das interfaces que os sujeitos se reconhecem, ao gerar um procedimento para as relações intersubjetivas, os aplicativos também se constituem como fragmentos materializados da subjetividade.CNPq: 141034/2015-
