Web of senses: a look at the creation of Terrence Malick in The tree of life

The present study addresses an analytical look at the creative work of American director Terrence Malick, the modes of materialization of his technical-stylistic resources (photography, sound, assembly of plans, among other characteristics) that provide meanings beyond the semantic content of cinematography. As a particular way of constructing a film, we think about the way these features configure the characters and their actions, observing in how the dramaturgy is thought through the available bibliography, in order to problematize what are the possible potencies implied in the creation of a proper style of dramaturgy in contemporary American cinema. From the point of view of the observer, we seek to promote meanings that emerge from the interaction between image and sound, questioning in what measure this relation is capable of articulating a unity through the discursive fragmentation present in the work The Tree of Life, (2011), our main object of study. In this film, the narrative does not seem to contain a factual, but rather discontinuous, order of presenting itself in a way that can be understood as fragmented. Such a contingent feature transgresses the classical structuring of dramaturgy and opens space for a certain similarity to the surrealist universe.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)O presente estudo aborda um olhar analítico sobre o fazer criativo do diretor norte-americano Terrence Malick, os modos de materialização de seus recursos técnico-estilísticos (fotografia, som, montagem de planos, entre outras características) que proporcionam significados para além do conteúdo semântico de cinematografia. Como forma particular de construção de um filme, pensamos no modo como aqueles recursos configuram os personagens e suas ações, observando em como a dramaturgia é pensada através da bibliografia disponível, no intuito de problematizar quais são as possíveis potências implicadas na criação de um estilo próprio de dramaturgia no cinema contemporâneo norte-americano. Pelo ponto de vista do observador, buscamos promover significações que emergem da interação entre a imagem e o som, questionando em que medidas tal relação é capaz de articular uma unidade através da fragmentação discursiva presente na obra A Árvore da Vida, (2011), nosso objeto de estudo. Neste filme, a narrativa não contêm uma ordem lógica factual, e sim descontínua, por se apresentar de forma passível de ser entendida como fragmentada. Tal característica contingente transgride a estruturação clássica de dramaturgia e abre espaço para certa similaridade ao universo surrealista.CAPES: 160466
