ABSTRACT One of obstacles in agricultural land expansion is limited arable land available. Limited fertile land forces agriculture practices to be conducted in marginal area such as tidal swamp area. Cultivating rice that is tolerant to salinity stress will be valuable in tidal swamp area. This experiment tried to study the effect of salinity level on growth, root characteristics and yield of three rice varieties. The experiment was carried out in a plastic house from October 2000 to February 2001 arranged in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Three upland rice varieties, i.e. IR-74, Maros and Way Rarem were grown in .polybags. Each was watered with 0, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 ppm of salt (1VaCI) solution regularly....
