Tanah karaton Surakarta

Abstract During the Dutch colonial period Karaton Surakarta was recognized as a "zelfbesturende landschap", i.e. an indigeneous selfgoverning authority. Based on its feudal system Karaton Surakarta considered itself as the owner of land its reigned. On the 17th August 1945, however, the Indonesian people declared it independence which eliminated the Dutch colonial domination in Indonesia. This research was intended to know the influence of the independence of the Indonesian people to the right over land of Karaton Surakarta it had ever had during the Dutch colonial period. Based on a documentary study, using a normative approach, this research found out that: a.the Indonesian independence eliminated the legal status of Karaton Surakarta as a "zelfbesturende landschap" and therefore Karaton Surakarta loosed its public and private legal personalityKaraton Surakarta remained then only as a group of family members presided by the Susuhunanb.the right over land owned by Karaton Surakarta during the Dutch colonial period as a "zelfbesturende landschap" was eliminated and became the right of the Indonesian Statebased on regulation in force, however, Karaton Surakarta had still rights of compensation and of obtaining a part of its expropriated land
