Gamelan Janger: Hibrida Musik Banyuwangi Dan Bali Sebuah Akulturasi Budaya = Gamelan Ringer: Banyuwanginese and Balinese Music Hybrid an Acculturation

ABSTRACT This thesis is an attempt to reveal Gamelan Janger as a product of an acculturation of Banyuwangi and Bali, which is examined through a qualitative research method applying an ethnomusicological approach. As a product of acculturation, Banyuwanginese Gamelan Janger was influenced by Balinese Gong Kebyar. In the first half of 20th century, Gong Kebyar underwent a vast development, and its influence even reached outside Bali including Banyuwangi. This ensemble was brought by Balinese people who migrated and settled in Banyuwangi. In Banyuwangi, Gong Kebyar, the multifunction ensemble, is accepted as a venue to express the aesthetical value. Despite the open mind of the native, Gong Kebyar was accepted for its high value of art, and its spirit that was regarded in accordance with the Banyuwanginese\u27s. Banyuwanginese combines Gong Kebyar ensemble with some local traditional instruments to produce a special and unique gamelan. The hybrid of Banyuwanginese and Balinese music is known as Gamelan Janger that is used as an accompaniment for Damarundan dance drama. The mixture of Banyuwangi and Bali cultures is obviously seen in Gamelan Janger. Besides its instrumentation, the Banyuwanginese employs an aesthetical concept of Balinese, which includes ngumbang-ngisep, gendinggending, and the technique of playing, combined with the use of local music instruments and the local aesthetical concept. This mixture produces a special and unique musical idiom, Gamelan Janger Banyuwangi musical idiom. Key words: Gamelan Janger, Acculturatio
