GAYA PAKAIAN PEREMPUAN JAWA Dl KOTA YOGYAKARTA PADA MASA KOLONIAL (The Javanese Female Dress Style in Yogyakarta City in Colonial Period)

This thesis discusses about the change of Javanese female dress style during the beginning of the twentieth century till the late colonial period. The main problem of this thesis is how far does the change took place in Yogyakarta influence on the female dress style, and what are the forms of those influ¬ences. It is unavoidable that modern educational institutions have brought about new spirit. At the same time, the indigenous\u27 intellectual spirit in eman¬cipation, progress and the quest for a new identity also emerge. In that re¬gard, intellectual Javanese aristocrat {priyayi) emerge as the figure that bring with them the idea of progress. In playing that role, then they become homi-ness novi (new people). As the hominess novi, they need new identity and symbol to express their "self". The aforementioned identity and symbol are reflected in their lifestyle, among the others is the way they dress themselves up-Female group, especially the indigenous young girls who went to the Dutch school, began to use Western skirt before the 1920s, while the more adult group only began to do the same thing in the medieval of the twentieth century. Women who were wearing the Western skirt before the 1940s are of the schoolgirls age group and the daughters of the aristocrat families sent to the European schools. Besides, there are also a group of women who does it for the sake of religious reason, such as Christian sisters who are obliged to wear special dress.
