ABSTRACT Roles of chlorogenic acid on tobacco resistance to Phytophthora nicotianae Waterhouse were studied by measuring the level of resistance of tobacco varieties to black shank disease, the virulence of Jember and Lumajang isolate of P. nicotianae, and chlorogenic acid content in tobacco leaves before and after inoculation. The result showed that Jember isolate was more virulent than that of Lumajang ones. Inoculation with Jember isolate showed moderate reaction on H600, susceptible on H362B, and highly susceptible on H382 and VDM-2 varieties, whereas inoculation with Lumajang isolate showed resistant reaction on H600 and H362B, moderate on H382 and VDM-2 varieties.
