In Style: an Anti-Textbook, Richard Lanham argues the two are linked: these textbooks exhort students to write an objective, neutral style of academic prose that is difficult to learn because it is too narrowly limited by the virtues of clarity, plainness and sincerity. Students are more likely to write well if they first learn to imitate, and translate between, a broad range of different prose styles.
