Bonobos are an interesting species to study due to their unique evolutionary features such as a peaceful social nature and hypersexual behavior. The prolonged exaggerated sexual swelling in females is a notable difference to chimpanzees, from which they diverged < 2 Million years ago. In my studies, I first show using whole-exomes, that there is genetic population substructure in bonobos. I estimate that the split between the western and the central bonobo population might be >100,000 years ago, comparable to modern human population split times.
