Packed bed reactors are widely used in various chemical processes. Fundamental understanding of the heat and mass transfer phenomena in the packed beds is essential for better modelling of these processes. Theoretical models used to describe the flow in packed beds generally assume an effectively homogeneous systems ignoring the complexities of flow in the void spaces of the packed beds. These details may however be influencing significantly the various phenomena in the system.
