The dissertation addresses how changes in gender norms influence demographic behaviors. It is composed of three articles. The first focuses on the macro-micro association between regional gender norms and couples' divorce risk in the United States. Using event-history analysis, I find a reverse U-shaped relationship between gender norms and marital instability. The second article turns to the relationship between female education and marital instability over the past five decades in the United States. The results show that, in recent years, college-educated women have a higher risk of entry into marriage along with a lower propensity to divorce than their less-educated counterparts.
