MobM relaxase from the promiscuous antibiotic resistance plasmid pMV158 is a prototype of the Mob_Pre/MOBV family of relaxases, the major family of relaxases found in Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcal infections cause the highest number of lethal cases among antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Relaxases initiate the conjugative DNA transfer, a major route for the antibiotic resistance acquisition in bacteria, by nicking their substrate DNA through formation of a covalent DNA-relaxase adduct and terminate the transfer in the recipient cells by rejoining ends of the linearized plasmid.
