847-851The title investigation is reported under conditions either favourable to energy transfer from 3BP (benzophenone) to pentacyanonitrosylferrate(II), (NP), which gives [Fe(CN)5CH3OH]2-, (LSP), or hydrogen abstraction by 3BP from propane-2-ol which gives [Fe(CN)4NO]2-, (TNF). In the former system naphthalene (NA) quenches the reaction upto its concentration -2 mol dm-3 beyond which φLSP (0.12) is constant. In the latter system NA completely quenches the formation of TNF with a concomitant increase in φLSP. The experimental data which is consistent with the proposed mechanism supports the quenching of 3BP and subsequent energy transfer from the resulting 3NA to NP
